Toyota, the leader in hybrid cars, is building 35 test Rav4 EV, electric vehicles. Consummating their partnership, they are enlisting  the help of Tesla, makers of the Tesla Roadster to Build Rav4 Electrics.toyota-rav4-ev_1

The 35  second-generation RAV4 EVs, are essentially a highly finished test mule that is virtually an unmodified RAV4 chassis married to Tesla’s electric powertrain. Volume production is set to begin in 2012.

Sit inside the RAV4 EV and you could be easily think it is a run-of-the-mill fossil fuel powered RAV4, except for two key differences. The first being an EV-specific instrument cluster, rav EV clusterand Second, a push button-driven drive selector has been lifted straight off the Tesla Roadster.

According to Toyota, the EV nearly matches the optional Rav4 V6’s zero to (60mph) time of 7.2 seconds.

Toyota Motor Corp. and its Silicon Valley partner Tesla Motors Inc. will develop an electric version of Toyota’s popular RAV4 SUV.

The two companies will work on prototypes combining the RAV4 model with a Tesla electric powertrain and expect to sell it in the United States in 2012, Tesla said.

It said a first prototype already has been produced.

Motor Trend is also reporting that Toyota is hard at work on a fully electric supercar. If there’s any truth to this report, it is said that Toyota President Akio Toyoda was so impressed after a spin in Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster that he immediately green-lit a feasibility study into the electric supercar project.

“Tesla’s goal is to produce increasingly affordable electric cars for mainstream buyers — relentlessly driving down the cost of EVs,” the company said in a statement.

Tesla now sells an electric roadster priced at just over $100,000, while Toyota is a leader in gas-electric hybrid vehicles and also plans to sell electric cars.

The two companies announced in May that they would team up to develop electric cars

Toyota Motor Sales presented A Silicon Valley California Leadership Group three plug-in Prius hybrid cars on June 15, 2010.Plug-in_Prius

Toyota will ultimately loan 150 of the cars to organizations nationwide for the next 18 months to see how they perform on the road. The results will help Toyota spot any kinks in the plug-in Prius before it goes on sale in 2012. The leadership group, a public policy organization representing more than 300 of the valley’s top companies, got the first three.

An advanced technology manager for Toyota stated that the education and feedback will be invaluable to Toyota as the Company readies the  vehicle for market introduction.

The president of the leadership group, will drive one of the  three cars. It’s reported the gentleman commutes to work by bicycle, but will drive the Prius to business meetings and put his Volvo up for sale on Craigslist. He plans to drive the loaner for the next 18 months and then buy a plug-in Prius when they hit the market.

Like the regular Prius, the plug-in still uses gasoline. But it comes with a more powerful, lithium-ion battery pack that can be recharged at home or at work. With a full charge, the car will drive exclusively on electricity for 13 miles before the gasoline motor kicks in. The regular Prius will go exclusively on electricity for a half mile.

Toyota has had an off-and-on history with plug-in cars.

The company made an electric version of the Rav4 from 1997 to 2003. But for most of the past decade, its executives argued that hybrids were better suited to the mass market, having a greater range over  higher priced all-electric cars.

That attitude appears to be changing as Toyota’s Chairman announces more exciting cars with higher efficiencies. Toyota’s competitors are rushing forward with plug-in hybrids, such as General Motors’ Chevy Volt, and all-electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf.

As reported last month, Toyota announced a surprise deal with Tesla Motors of Palo Alto, which makes luxury electric sports cars. Sometime in the next two years, the two companies plan to create an electric car that Tesla’s chief executive described as a Toyota vehicle with a Tesla power train.

Here is the New 2011 Rav4, Toyota’s small land cruiser. Toyota has completely revised the front end, with new headlights, front grille, a new hood and a new front bumper with integrated fog lights. 2011_toyota_rav4

The RAV4 boasts a new design, but it appears to have kept existing proportions. Details about the engines have yet to be divulged however, but it’s expected that there won’t be any major changes.

The 2011 Toyota RAV4 would benefit from the addition of Bluetooth wireless connectivity and by having a USB port instead of an auxiliary plug to interface with iPods. Toyota could also migrate some upscale features previously reserved for the Sport and Limited to the Base model — or to a new interim edition to commemorate the approaching end of this third-generation RAV4. Otherwise, the 2011 RAV4 will continue with a fine array of standard safety features and a slightly less-impressive suite of convenience items. On the safety front, every RAV4 gets antilock four-wheel disc brakes with brake assist, plus traction and antiskid control. The head-protecting curtain side airbags cover only the first two seating rows but include rollover sensors. RAV4s equipped with the V-6 or third-row seat add hill ascent/descent control. Sport models have 18-inch wheels and handle well but ride stiffly. The other models lean more and grip less in fast turns, but their more absorbent tires and suspension settings are welcome on bumpy roads. A height-adjustable driver’s seat, tilt/telescoping steering, remote keyless entry, and power mirrors, windows and locks will again be included in the base price of the 2011 RAV4. A power sunroof and a DVD-based navigation system are options that have been exclusive to the Sport and Limited models. Leather upholstery with heated front seats and rear-seat DVD entertainment

***UPDATE***    “Thanks to a more powerful four-cylinder engine and other upgrades for 2009, the RAV4 narrowly outscored the Subaru Forester to remain Consumer Reports’ Top Pick for another straight year. It provides agile handling, a roomy and quiet interior, a comfortable ride, and an optional third-row seat. The four-cylinder version gets the best fuel economy of any automatic, nonhybrid SUV we’ve tested.
